Your Master Bedroom, Done Three Ways…

Q. I just painted my bedroom a warm cottage white and installed hardwood floors and want to spruce up the space. I have a small window (about 40″x48″) above my king bed and I’m thinking about ditching my headboard and using the window as a focal point above the bed. My bedroom is only 11′x12′ so the bed takes up most of the room. I would love to hear any ideas you have!

A. Hi Katie. Thanks so much for your question. I love the idea of using your window as a focal point above your bed! The best way to make an architectural feature a focal point is to visually frame it. I used an 11′ wide wall, 40″wide x 48″ tall window, and king size bed to sketch three solutions for visually highlighting the window in your bedroom. In all three solutions I would use roman shades for privacy on the window so that you don’t have to wrestle with drapery between your bed and the wall.

#2: In this option I would install 4 rows of evenly spaced shelving above where a headboard would normally be (36-48

#3: In this last option, I would use drapery fabric to soften the wall behind the bed. Use a ceiling mounted drapery rod to hang the fabric so that it can truly go wall to wall. Then use metal or wood tie backs placed about 2

I hope these sketches help you come up with some inspiration for sprucing up your new master bedroom!

These ideas are wonderful Mackenzie! And the sketches are perfect visuals. Since my room is small I really like the shelving concepts for extra storage. I’ll email you some photos when I finish the project. Thanks a BUNCH!
